Voting Positions Open to Nominate & Elect for the 2024-2025 Academic Year


Classified Senate President
Term: July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025

The President serves a 1-year term and is open for nomination and election if the current President-Elect is not planning to take the role. The President leads the Classified Senate and serves as tri-chair or Senate representative on several committees. The President will work with the Executive Council to determine which Shared Governance committees' he/she/they will serve on; these roles are often in a leadership/tri-chair position. Additional committees may include IPBT (tri-chair), College Council (tri-chair), Chancellor's Advisory Council, College Planning, and Board Meetings. This role is EXPECTED TO EXCEED the granted 4 hours/week of Shared Governance work; over-time compensation may apply based on committee commitment.  

Classified Senate President-Elect
Term: July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025

The President-Elect may become President in their second year. This role will act as Classified Senate President if the position is vacant or vacated. The President-Elect serves as the chair of the By-Laws Committee and leadership/mentorship role for one of the Areas of Focus. The President-Elect will work with the Executive Council to determine which Shared Governance committees' he/she/they will serve on; these roles are often in a leadership/trichair position. This role is EXPECTED TO EXCEED the granted 4 hours/week of Shared Governance work; over-time compensation may apply based on committee commitment.  

Secretary
Term: July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025

The Secretary is responsible for calling for meeting agenda items and keeping/posting meeting minutes. The Secretary will serve as a mentor for one of our Areas of Focus and may serve on an additional Shared Governance committee. This role is expected to fall within the allotted 4 hours/week of Shared Governance work but MAY EXCEED these hours; overtime compensation may apply based on committee commitment.  

Treasurer
Term: July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025

The Treasurer accepts contributions, disburses funds, maintains financial records, and submits financial reports to the Senate. The Treasurer also set up the budget for the Executive Council and Senate approval. The Treasurer will serve as a mentor for one of our Areas of Focus and may serve on an additional Shared Governance committee. This role is expected to fall within the allotted 4 hours/week of Shared Governance work but MAY EXCEED these hours; over-time compensation may apply based on committee commitment.  

Communications Officer
Term: July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025

The Communications Officer maintains the Senate website and posts Senate Agendas and Minutes to the Senate website. The Communications Officer will serve as a mentor for one of our Areas of Focus and may serve on an additional Shared Governance committee. This role is expected to fall within the allotted 4 hours/week of Shared Governance work but MAY EXCEED these hours; over-time compensation may apply based on committee commitment.  

Senator Lead - Operational & Facilities Area of Focus - 2 Year Term
Term: July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2026 - 2 Seats Available

The Senator Leads serve in a mentor role in their Area of Focus. Senator Leads will serve on the Classified Senate and a Shared Governance or Classified Senate Standing Committee within their Area of Focus. The Senator Lead should expect to spend their allotted 4 hours a week of Shared Governance work in their Senator Lead role. In case the work MAY EXCEED these hours; over-time compensation may apply based on committee commitment.

The Senator Designees serve as support in their Area of Focus. They may serve on a Shared Governance committee in their area of focus but are not obligated to do so. This role is designed as a learning opportunity for those new to Classified Senate and Shared Governance. Senator Designees should plan to spend approximately 2 hours/week on their work and in meetings in this role. In case the work MAY EXCEED more than allocated 4 hours (10% of regular hours); over-time compensation may apply based on committee commitment.

Duties of Positions and Senate  

Excerpt from Classified Senate Bylaws  

President duties include:  

  1. Preside over meetings of the Senate and of the Executive Council and other decision-making bodies.  
  2. Authorized as a spokesperson to express publicly the express the views of the Senate on policies, procedures and governance.  
  3. Coordinate with other members of Executive Council to determine which Executive Council member will serve as a lead for the Areas of Focus.  
  4. Appear or designate a representative to appear before shared governance bodies or to express the views of the Senate on policies, procedures and governance.  
  5. Call for agenda items for Executive Council meetings, senate meetings, general membership meetings.  
  6. Plan with the executive council, and delegate to a planning committee to coordinate the Annual Senate Leadership Retreat and other leadership development and professional development and decision-making activities.  
  7. Mentor those in a designated/assumed/elected Area of Focus.  
  8. Serves as a liaison to Classified Professionals in an effort to help survey, measure and report on their ability to participate in Classified Senate and Shared Governance.  
  9. May act in another executive role in the absence of the holder of that role.  
  10. Serve as Past-President and Chair of the Mentorship and Advisory Group for at least 1 year following their term of President.  
  11. Perform other duties as required.  

President-elect duties include:  

  1. Becomes the President of the Senate upon the expiration or vacancy of the incumbent President's term of office and hold an annual vote on bylaws  
  2. Delegate a planning committee to initiate the election process during the spring quarter.  
  3. Act as chair of the Bylaws Committee.
  4. Read and assess the Academic Senate agenda to determine if attending an Academic Senate meeting is necessary for Classified Senate  
  5. Mentor those in a designated/assumed/elected Area of Focus  
  6. May act in another executive role in the absence of the holder of that role  
  7. Perform other duties as required by the office  

Secretary duties include:  

  1. Call for agenda items for Senate meetings  
  2. Prepare the minutes of Senate and Executive Council meetings or delegate to someone to take minutes in their absence  
  3. Maintain and file Senate records  
  4. Keep a list of Senators together with the expiration date of each Senator's term of office  
  5. Mentor those in a designated/assumed/elected Area of Interest  
  6. May act in another executive role in the absence of the holder of that role  
  7. Perform other duties as required by the office

  2. Set up the budget for the Executive Council and Senate approval  
  3. Mentor those in a designated/assumed/elected Area of Interest.  
  4. May act in another executive role in the absence of the holder of that role.  
  5. Perform other duties as required by the office.  

Communications Officer duties include:  

  1. Maintain the Senate website.  
  2. Post Senate Agendas and Minutes to the Senate website  
  3. Maintain any Senate social media presences.  
  4. Mentor those in a designated/assumed/elected Area of Interest.  
  5. May act in another executive role in the absence of the holder of that role.  
  6. Work collaboratively with the Equity, Inclusion and Recognition Committee to survey, measure and report on Classified Professional ability and interest to serve on Senate or Shared Governance.  
  7. Perform other duties as required by the office.   

Senator Lead and Designee duties include:   

  1. Attend regular Classified Senate meetings  
  2. Ratify all appointments made by the President of the Classified Senate  
  3. Maintain constant oral and written communication with Sections to:  
  4. disseminate on regular basis information from Classified Senate meetings and  
  5. poll Section members on issues needing consensus by the Classified Senate  
  6. Report to the Classified Senate on matters from their Sections which are part of the Classified Senate's concern
  7. Post minutes of Classified Senate meetings  
  8. Find an alternate to attend Senate meetings in their absence  
  9. Perform other duties as required by their office  

The Classified Senate is organized to:  

  1. Participate in the De Anza College governance structure;  
  2. Provide a unified body representing the needs, concerns and perspectives of the classified professionals;  
  3. Provide a centralized means of communication among classified professionals and with the rest of the college community;  
  4. Select from its membership representatives to serve on governance and college committees;  
  5. articulate the professionalism of the classified professionals so that it is properly recognized and valued;  
  6. Provide an opportunity for enhancing the democratic experience of governance at De Anza College;  
  7. Provide an opportunity to develop individual leadership among the classified professionals;
