Decision for adding two positions (1 ASLR and 1 E & E)
Vote was taken: Twenty-three voting members present.
Majority 74% approved ASLR Online Faculty Coordinator. Since majority did not approve the position as automatically chosen for hire, it will be added to the hiring positions list making for 28 positions in all.
Majority of 96% approved Equity & Engagement LGBTQ+ Faculty Coordinator with the majority also approving the position as one of the hired positions.
Presentation of Faculty Hire Needs by Deans
Dean of Language Arts Thomas Ray spoke of the need for English faculty especially with the implementation of AB 705. He also emphasized the need for English as a Second Language faculty since their department has grown to twice the size and noncredit curriculum has been incorporated into offerings.
Dean of Intercultural/International Studies Edmundo Norte emphasized the need to replace World Language Faculty Coordinator. New Spanish faculty member will be tasked with developing a Spanish for native speakers course sequence. Kimberly Vinall, the former World Language Coordinator, asked Edmundo to share her statement: “Discussions of equity MUST include the entire institutional structure and one that systematically exploits part time labor is not an equitable system. The World Language coordinator position would be only a tiny step to mediate this harsh reality, but it is a necessary one. Because of the WL coordinator position, we held our very first workshop to review together our programs and learning goals and complete the program review. I am attaching this document as a reminder of the substantive nature of this work (I am incredibly proud of it, in fact!) and my own belief that it is essential to continue it in order to have a means to reflect on and assess equity goals within and across language programs.”
Dean of Physical Sciences, Mathematics & Engineering Jerry Rosenberg presented the special needs of each of the three departments having positions on the list. Astronomy classes are popular with students for meeting the science general education requirement and serve the Latinx student population in far greater proportion than De Anza College as a whole (Latinx students make up 25% of student population, but 37% of students enrolled in Astronomy classes). Mathematics department lost three instructors to retirement and is seeking to replace two. The Mathematics Performance Success Program (MPS) has been showing gains in improving student success. The focus will be to hire faculty members eager to teach a combination of MPS classes along with non-MPS classes to infuse the entire department offerings with the success of MPS program. Engineering department has grown in the number of students and shows success rates between 86 and 93% during the past five years. The equity gap between -1 to 9% is smaller than the College’s. There is no full-time faculty member teaching in the department and two part-time instructors have left for full-time jobs.
