Bookstore Clothing Sale and Donation Request
Check out the great bargains at the Bookstore's clothing sale beginning Jan. 22. Back this year is the "Operation Prom Dress" donation drive, which allows high school girls to choose a free dress to wear to their prom. Last year 1,000 girls benefited. Free Flu Shots for Students

Silicon Valley Reads 2013: Invisible Wounds of War
Silicon Valley Reads is a community project that includes the reading of selected books and participation in associated programming. De Anza College is participating in three parts of the project.
In the Euphrat: War & Healing
This exhibition invites viewers to examine their perspectives about war and reaffirm their sense of humanity. A reception for the artists will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, 5:30-7:30 p.m. with a printmaking demonstration by Diego Marcial Rios.

“The Long Walk”
Brian Castner, author of “The Long Walk,” will talk about being in combat and the difficulties he experienced when he returned home. President Brian Murphy will moderate a panel discussion with Castner and student veterans.

My Vote Our Future Honored with Two Awards
The grassroots voting campaign was recognized with proclamations from California State Assemblyman Paul Fong and the Santa Clara County Department of Education for registering more than 3,000 new voters in two months for the November general election. A team of 28 De Anza student organizers, high school interns and more than 100 De Anza volunteers worked to engage underrepresented youth, immigrants, parents and low-income residents in the voting process. Study Abroad in Viet Nam Summer 2013
Students are invited to an informational meeting about this summer’s Study Abroad
in Viet Nam program on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Library, Room 235.
The program dates are July1-25, and includes credit for EWRT 1A, 1B, 1C, EWRT 2, ELIT

Scholarships at De Anza
The Financial Aid Office offers more than 50 scholarships and most applications are due Feb. 14. There is also a $20,000 Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Program scholarship to UC Santa Cruz with an application deadline of Feb. 1. Nine De Anza Faculty and Staff Honored
President Brian Murphy named nine colleagues as De Anza’s winners of the League for Innovation John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Awards for their outstanding contributions in teaching and leadership as well as their individual work. Winners are:

NCORE Presenter
Pauline Wethington has been invited to be a guest presenter at the National Conference on Race & Ethnicity (NCORE) in May, which focuses on issues of diversity. She will speak about counseling strategies to improve the academic success of African American students.

Employee of the Month Award - January 2013
Dennis Shannakian began working at De Anza College as a student employee in April 1997 and became a full-time classified professional in September 1999 in the Office of College Life. He has served as a Classified Senate senator and president, as a chief steward in SEIU (the previous classified union) and a member of the board of ACE (Association of Classified Employees, the current union).
